The first and striking photographs of Antarctica

On January 27, 1820 Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen , of German origin and explorer of the Russian fleet, led his expedition to the continent of ice, but it was not until the early twentieth century when it could begin to explore seriously. photography cover, performed by Frank Hurley , may be one of the first that were taken there. In the summer of 1911 , a team of Australian scientists traveled to Antarctica, where they remained until 1914. Under the supervision of Dr. Douglas Mawson, explored part of Antarctica that lies directly south of Australia, an area almost totally unknown to the rest of the world. Here is a sampling of some of the images the photographer Frank Hurley took during this and subsequent expeditions otraa. The images are stored in the State Library of New South Wales.
